Hokkaido in the winter is cold and if you go to the very north coast along the Sea of Okhotsk, you'll find Abashiri (網走市) 260km / 165mi north of Sapporo. In February, it's the high season for tourists because this is where you go to see a lot of snow. ice drifts and eat a lot of amazing seafood. During the city's annual Drift Ice Festival, you'll also find the amazing Okhotsk Yatai Mura Food Market (オホーツク屋台村) where local resident come out to celebrate the cold long nights together with good food from the Sea of Okhotsk and copious amounts of beer and atsukan (hot Japanese sake). This is an excellent experience of a lively night market in Hokkaido and worth a stop and bite. taking a late hour and very affordable Peach Airline plane from Tokyo to Memanbetsu Airport and once landed immediately rushing outside to catch the bus that was waiting for us. The plane had delay but the public bus for Abashiri town was still there to fetch us. the ride was really fast maybe 20-30 min. I'm staying at Toyoko Inn Hotel few meters from the bus stop and 25 min on foot to Aurora Ice Breaker. the first day it is really snowing a lot so I'm glad I did not book a boat for this day. instead we are going the next day when the weather will be perfect. you can see that in the next video!

It was constructed in the 1890s to hold over 1,000 dangerous criminals; think of it as Japan's Alcatraz. Very few prisoners ever escaped or even tried to escape because of Hokkaido's isolation and brutal winters. Where could they go with no food or clothing even though conditions inside the prison were not the best? A modern prison still functions in Abashiri a few miles away but these are the original buildings.
The Senmo line connects Abashiri and Kushiro in the east of Hokkaido Japan. In this video we take a trip on the line and visit Kushiro. While many railway lines in Hokkaido run express trains, this 166km long line only runs local trains and semi-express trains, so it's a long journey. The line passes through some beautiful areas close to Lake Kussharo and the wetlands of Kushiro where the Japanese Crane can often be seen. As the line runs along the Sea of Okhotsk you can also see the Steller's Sea Eagle. You can also see the Shiretoko peninsula, home to Shiretoko National Park, one of Japan's World Heritage sites. Other notable sights are Mt. Shari and drift ice in winter. Kushiro is an aging town in Hokkaido but it has it's charms, famous for seafood and a daily fresh seafood market. It's worth a visit once. Abashiri is located in the northeast of Hokkaido, facing the Sea of Okhotsk. Between January&April, you can see the beautiful drift ice ! Abashiri Drift Ice (Ryuhyo) is located on a similar geographical latitude as Portland (Oregon) and Venice (Italy). The Sea of Okhotsk coast of Hokkaido is the northern hemisphere's southernmost region to see drifting sea ice. The sea ice typically reaches the coast around Abashiri in mid to late January and disappears again by late March to mid April. The best time to view it is usually around the second half of February. While drift ice (流氷, Ryūhyō) can be observed along the entire Sea of Okhotsk coast from Wakkanai to the Shiretoko Peninsula, it gets thickest around Abashiri. Due to global warming, the amount and thickness of the drift ice has decreased quite considerably since the late 1980s. Getting there and around Buses connect Abashiri Station with the Aurora boat terminal (10 minutes, 200 yen), stopping at the Abashiri Bus Terminal along the way.
