Whenever I move to a new passion project, I challenge myself: What can I do to make it better, more immersive and create something never seen before. It’s really hard to work up those expectations but it’s my fundamental driving force since day one. It pushes me to not to lean back and relax but instead work harder than the year before to grow a director and filmmaker. This passion project is very special as it started with a big technical development way before the trip. The goal was clear, there was no other way than to use high-quality cinema cameras for this passion project to capture animals in slow motion and to step up the quality. For this mission, the the current Cinelifter FPV drones were not sufficient as I used them before for 2 years in the same environment and there was room for improvement. They only flew 4-5 minutes, are slow and very noisy. We needed something that is quieter, faster and flies much longer. After a couple of months of development Josh and I finished our Startruss which I then took into the field to focus on the creative part of this passion project and see what this drone is capable of. I was surprised how much extra 5-6 minutes matter when filming animals and the lower noise is a game changer when filming animals. So being able to fly with a FX6 or Komodo on top while cursing for 10 minutes I was able to be more creative. One note about flight time: I was flying the 5200mah Li-Ion pack down to about 3v per cell and was seeing about 23:30 flights. With upgrade energy Li-Ions you can safely fly down to 2.7v per cell. This pushes flight time past the 25 minute mark! Very excited to share this build with you guys. I don't fly much long range but now that I built this beast I can already tell long range is going to be one of my new favorite FPV pastimes. Filming inquires: management🤍johnnyfpv.com And here it is! Super stoked to finally share my latest collaboration with 🤍Porsche - Drive2Extremes. Taycan Cross Turismo x Johnny FPV. Shot in -30 +30 conditions from Levi, Finland to Liwa Desert, UAE. This project was epic to say the least. We shot the film on two identical tracks (on opposite sides of the world). The desert track in Abu Dhabi was built completely from scratch, a perfect 1:1 replica of the one in Finland. Mirroring the two created a really interesting contrast of environments, and gave us the ability to seamlessly merge the two locations together in the edit. The goal was to create a piece with 100% seamless transitions. On the technical side of things, we wanted to develop drones that could effortlessly carry larger cinema cameras. Losing any essence of true FPV agility and performance would be a big failure. Proud to say this was achieved. We shot the entire film on the RED Komodo and FreeFly Wave camera (with the exception of flying through the window, GoPro). With many years of stabilised drone experience I did not start as a fresh beginner, but still this drone was completely different to anything I ever flew before. I started by practicing in both the DJI simulator on my phone and Liftoff on my laptop in order to be prepared for the first flight. After flying the drone manually for the first time, I immediately understood why everybody is addicted to FPV. I practiced as much as I could and was able to capture some first cinematic shots. We were out for a day of long range mountain surfing in British Columbia on Vancouver Island with our long range drones (that we build ourselves), hoping to get some nice cinematic footage. There was a "severe avalanche warning" a couple of days prior, but things seemed to have calmed down. Just when were were getting ready to leave, I looked up and saw a huge avalanche coming down the mountain right in front of us! I scrambled to get a battery on my long range FPV drone, fumbled with my GoPro, and booked it out towards the mountain as fast as I possibly could. I got there just in time to see an absolutely scary amount of snow from an avalanche hitting the bottom of the mountain. What looks like water in this video is actually a huge amount of snow, with some chucks as big as my truck. Since I had the goggles on, I couldn't see what was goin on around me, and I was pretty paranoid about the avalanche coming down the mountain, through the valley and up the other side where we were sitting, all without me knowing. I was also worried that the road would get obliterated and we'd be stuck way out in the back country.
