The Walls of Jericho Trail is a 9-mile out and back trail near Estillfork, Alabama with a Difficult rating. 1,597 ft in elevation. Because it's a difficult trail to navigate, it's not suitable for amateur hikers. The "Walls" are made from limestone and resemble a large bowl shaped amphitheater. Its main feature is a beautiful hidden waterfall. It's well worth the major effort to get down there. There are beautiful waterfalls and caves to be found! Dustin did this solo this time and I did this with him a few years back with our beagles and I didn't die!

Mention the landscapes of Alabama, and most people are apt to conjure up images of the beaches of the Gulf Shores region or the forested Talladega Mountains. And for good reason—the beaches are famous for their sugar-white sand, and the mountains offer epic views of tree-covered ridges and valleys. Still, Alabama has plenty more to offer in the terrain department. Known as the most biodiverse state east of the Mississippi River, it is also home to river deltas, coastal plains and open prairies. Fortunately, a robust system of trails offers access to Alabama’s scenic bounty. Here are 10 of our favorite trails, from the bustling cities in the north to the sand and surf in the south. There’s also several gear recommendations for a female solo overnight hiker, including makeup products for a backpacker!

Cheaha Wilderness (Alabama) Backpacking - March 2021

22.03.2021

The second hike of the 2021 season took me south, to the Cheaha Wilderness of Alabama, for a hike with Carl, Travis and the dogs. It's hard to believe but it had been nearly 10 months since I last met up with Carl and Travis for the 2020 Cranberry Wilderness hike (thanks to Covid crushing our 2020 western trip plans). I'd been wanting to get down to the Cheaha Wilderness for a number of years, and actually had a trip planned there in 2019 to do the popular Pin-Chin-Sky Loop hike (an 18-mile loop consisting of the Pinhoti Trail, Chinabee Silent Trail, and Skyway Trail) but with bad weather in the forecast then I decided to hike the Red River Gorge in Kentucky to shorten the drive. When planning this trip we looked at three different options: (1) the Pin-Chin-Sky Loop, (2) a north-to-south, point-to-point hike from the Cheaha Trailhead to the Adams Gap Trailhead entirely on the Pinhoti Trail, and (3) the hike we eventually decided upon - a 3-day 15-mile loop hike starting south on the Pinhoti Trail from the Cheaha Trailhead, to the Odom Scout Trail, connecting with the Nubbin Creek Trail, and then Cave Creek Trail back to the cars. After hiking in the Cheaha Wilderness I'm certain any of these options would have made for a great hike, and we all plan to get back to explore the other hike options in the future. Aside from a gnarly, seemingly endless stretch of rock-walking on day #1 (ok, probably a mile or so - seemed much longer!), the trails were very pleasant to walk on - fairly smooth and gently graded, and the views were outstanding (aided by the early-season lack of vegetation). Campsites were fairly plentiful, but water was not. But, thanks to the awesome Guthook app 'Pinhoti Trail' download, we knew that there likely would be no water until we reached camp on day #1 at the 7-mile mark, and had planned accordingly. On day #2 we had no Guthook app 'coverage', and no advance knowledge of the trails or water conditions, and that added a bit to our stress level, but in one of those amazing 'the trail provides' moments we came upon a group of two hikers heading in the opposite direction that gave us great 'intel' on water and a campsite for night #2 (for those thinking of doing this hike, there were only two water sources on day #2, and one source on day #1, so three viable water sources on the entire hike - all shown in the video). For those who have watched my other videos this one is done in the same style - a little less than an hour in length, intended to bring the audience along for the 'ride', and with a still picture slide show with music at the end. If you just have a few minutes skip to the end and enjoy the pictures. DeSoto Falls is the best waterfall in all of Alabama in our opinion and one of the best hikes down to a waterfall that we have ever done, one of Alabama's best attractions within DeSoto State Park. The hike down to the bottom of the falls is incredible but a bit hard to find. There is a small cleared area about a quarter mile before you get to the main parking area for DeSoto Falls on your right under some power lines, just as you come around a curve in the road. You will find the trail there! - You may enjoy these episodes from us as well: * Crater Lake National Park... 🤍 * Rocky Mountain National Park... 🤍 * Top 5 Springs in Florida with a Campground...🤍 Don't forget to subscribe to our channel...🤍 See the gear we use and support our channel by using our Amazon store....🤍 We participate in the Amazon affiliate program and receive a small referral on our store at no cost to you!

On a whim we traveled to Alabama. We weren’t sure where we were headed for our day I just knew that we wanted to do a little bit of off-road driving a little bit of hiking and just enjoy being outside. We wound up at Little River Canyon and hiked it’s a little river Falls. When you get a little river canyon the Falls is immediately at the beginning of the trail. Anybody who wants to see Little River Falls can’t see it from an easy paved path to the waterfall. We then traveled the trail down to a section where there was another rolling waterfall. The weather was beautiful and the water was even more beautiful. Do you ever have the chance to head to Fort Payne Alabama do not miss little river canyon. It is an absolutely amazing waterfall.

Watch my most recent video about AT OVERCROWDING - 🤍 There are nearly 260 shelters on the Appalachian Trail. A simple building that protects it’s inhabitants from the elements. In this video I give my reasons why I won’t be staying in shelters anymore. But as I mention I believe every situation should be considered based on the the condition of the shelter and tenting spots around. Backpacking the Pin-Chin-Sky Loop Trail

This is a 2-night/3-day backpacking trip in the Talladega National Forest and Cheaha Wilderness that combines a section of the long distance Pinhoti Trail with the local Chinnabee Silent Trail and the Skyway Trail to make a loop that starts and ends at the Adam's Gap Trailhead near Talladega, Alabama (east of Birmingham). This hike features beautiful views, water falls, and back country camping. Jacob and I decided on short notice to do this classic central-Alabama loop trail. The weather was good, if a bit warm mid-day (mid-to-upper 80's °F; about 30 °C) but the nights were cool. This is about a 20 mile (32 km) loop that ends up totaling about 3000 ft (920 m) of altitude gain. We set out at about noon from Adam's Gap up the Pinhoti trail (counterclockwise on the loop), climbed the Stairway to Heaven (the steepest section of the entire hike), and stayed at a campsite with a fantastic view (mile 79.3 on the Pinhoti; 33.4196,-85.8336). The next morning, we hiked the Chinnabee Silent trail down the mountain to first Cheaha Falls and then the Devil's Den cascades. After cooling off in the water, we continued on up Skyway trail to our second night's campsite along the Hubbard Creek. Finally, on the 3rd morning, we hiked back up and out to Adam's Gap. Note that the Pin-Chin-Sky Loop trail is also known as the Skyway Loop trail.
